Why we called it The Still Room

When people hear the name for the first time, they often assume it refers to meditation, quietness, or relaxation.

Those things certainly have their place here. But the name was chosen for a different reason.

The term still room has a long history. Traditionally, it was a dedicated space within large country houses and estates — where herbs were dried, teas were blended, and remedies were prepared. Essential oils and herbal waters were extracted through distilling, using a device called a still — which is where the name comes from. The still room was often overseen by the lady of the house. It became a place of knowledge, care, and quiet hospitality.

Long before any of this became an industry, the still room was simply where people turned to nature to support their health.

That heritage felt right to us.

But the modern meaning of the word still felt equally important.

We live in a world that rarely stands still. Our days fill quickly — with notifications, responsibilities, deadlines, and the low hum of things left unfinished. Even when we stop, our minds often don't. We move from one thing to the next without quite noticing how we feel.

The Still Room exists as a pause in that.

Not because life should be lived in silence. But because stillness creates space — to breathe, to settle, to notice.

Stillness looks different for everyone. Some people find it through sound, others through breath or simple quiet. There's no single way to arrive at it.

What the name holds, then, is both things at once: an old tradition of care, and a modern invitation to slow down. A room where something useful happens, and a reminder that slowing down is itself something useful.

That's why it felt like the right name.
